Taking concrete out is the first step of most replacements and sometimes the whole job. We remove driveways, patios, walks, carport slabs, shed pads, steps and footings. The work starts with saw cuts, so the break follows a straight line and the concrete that stays is not damaged. Then the slab is broken, loaded and hauled to a recycler or disposal site. You get a clear price for removal on its own line.
What is under the slab is unknown until it is lifted. In Baton Rouge we find old thin slabs poured over even older ones, tree roots as thick as an arm, soft wet clay, and now and then a buried pipe nobody knew about. Before breaking anything we request utility marks through Louisiana 811, which the state dig law requires at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. Sprinkler lines, yard lights and private gas or water runs are not marked by the utilities, so we ask you about those.
If your house or a nearby slab is post-tensioned, tell us. Those slabs have steel cables under high tension, and cutting one is dangerous. Many newer subdivisions around Baton Rouge use them, and they are often stamped with a warning at the garage. After removal we leave the area graded and safe, either ready for a new pour or filled and shaped so water drains the right way.
Concrete removal in Baton Rouge: common questions
Is removal included when you replace my driveway?
Yes. Break-out and haul-away are in our replacement quotes, listed separately so you can see the cost. If we find something under the slab that changes the base work, we show you and agree the change before going on.
Can you take out a slab without tearing up my yard?
We limit the damage, but trucks and machines leave marks on soft ground, and Baton Rouge lawns are soft much of the year. We plan the route, use mats where it helps, and tell you beforehand what to expect. Dry weather makes a real difference.
Who calls 811 before the concrete comes out?
We do, when we are doing the digging. Louisiana law puts that duty on the excavator. The marks cover public utilities only, so walk the yard with us and point out anything private that is buried.
