A garden path is the small job that changes how you use a yard. It gets you from the driveway to the back gate without crossing wet grass, and from the patio to the shed or the vegetable bed. In Baton Rouge wet grass is the normal state for much of the year, so these paths get real use. We pour them as a continuous ribbon, as separate stepping pads with gaps, or as a mix of both.
Separate pads suit this ground well. Each pad can rise and fall a little with the clay without cracking, and the gaps let rain soak in instead of running off. Near trees they are the kindest choice, since they leave most of the root zone open. A continuous path is better where a wheelbarrow, a mower or a wheelchair has to roll. For those we keep the surface even, add joints every few feet and give it a slight tilt to one side.
Side yards between houses are often the wettest strip on the lot, because both roofs shed into them. A solid path there can block the flow and send water toward a foundation. We look at where that water goes before we pour, and sometimes the right answer is a path set to one side of a shallow swale. Finish matters too: under shade a textured surface is safer than a smooth one.
Garden paths & pathways in Baton Rouge: common questions
Will a path through my side yard make it flood?
It can if it dams the low line that water follows. We set the path beside that line or leave gaps for water to cross. If the side yard already holds water for days, fix the drainage first and pour second.
Stepping pads or a solid path?
Pads if you want less runoff, less root damage and a casual look. Solid if anything with wheels uses it or if someone in the home is unsteady on their feet. We can mix them, solid near the house and pads farther out.
How do I stop a shaded path from getting slick?
Choose a broom or exposed finish, keep leaves off it and wash it when the green film starts. Trimming back plants so air and some sun reach the surface slows the growth a great deal.
