Cutting and polishing are both done with diamond tools, and both are about working on concrete that is already hard. Saw cutting makes a clean, straight line through a slab. We cut to remove one damaged section without harming the next, to open a trench for a drain or a pipe, to add a control joint that should have been there from the start, and to trim a slab back from a tree or a wall.
Before any cut we need to know what is inside and under the slab. Utility marks from Louisiana 811 cover public lines in the ground. They do not show wires or pipes cast in the concrete, and they do not show post-tension cables. Many house slabs built around Baton Rouge in recent decades are post-tensioned, and cutting a stressed cable can cause serious injury and structural damage. We look for the warning stamp, ask you what you know, and stop if anything is in doubt.
Polishing grinds an interior floor in steps, from coarse to very fine, with a hardener applied along the way, until the surface is dense and reflects light. It makes a floor that needs no wax, sheds dust and stands up to our humidity. It suits shops, offices, showrooms and living areas. The slab has to be sound, and repairs and old stains will remain visible as part of the look. Grinding is done with dust control and vacuums.
Concrete cutting and polishing in Baton Rouge: common questions
Can you cut a new joint in a driveway that is cracking?
Sometimes. If the slab is still mostly whole, added joints can steer future cracks into straight lines. Once random cracks have formed, a saw cut will not undo them. We look at the pattern before promising anything.
How do I know if my slab is post-tensioned?
Look for a stamped or painted warning on the garage floor near the door, and for a row of small round patches along the outside edge of the slab. Your builder's papers may say. If you are unsure, treat it as post-tensioned and do not cut or drill.
Is polished concrete slippery when it rains?
Clean, dry polished concrete has good grip. Wet, it is like any smooth hard floor, so use mats at doors. We do not polish outdoor slabs, because they are rained on.
