Concrete is not the right answer every time, and we would sooner tell you that than pour a job you regret. Its strengths are real. It is rigid, so it spreads a load over soft ground. It does not rut under tires or wash out in a storm. It handles heat without softening, which matters when a driveway bakes for months. And it needs little care: an occasional wash and attention to the joints.
Its weaknesses show up on Baton Rouge clay. A rigid slab cannot flex when the ground under it swells and shrinks, so it cracks, and no contractor can prevent every crack. Repairs show, because new concrete never matches old. Concrete also sheds every drop of rain that lands on it, and on a flat lot that runoff has to be sent somewhere. Close to a large oak, a solid slab harms the roots and the roots harm the slab.
So here is how we would choose. For a driveway that carries cars every day, concrete is usually the best value over time. For a path under trees or a patio where roots are close, pavers or separated pads can be lifted and reset when the ground moves. For a long rural drive, concrete near the house and well-built gravel beyond can be the sensible split. Tell us what you want the surface to do and we will give you our honest view.
Why concrete? in Baton Rouge: common questions
Is concrete or asphalt better for a driveway in Baton Rouge?
For most homes here, concrete. Long hot summers soften asphalt, and it marks under tires and trailer jacks. Asphalt costs less at the start and flexes more on moving ground, but it needs resealing and has a shorter life.
When would you tell me not to pour concrete?
When a big tree's roots run under the spot, when a yard has a drainage problem that has not been solved, or when the ground is moving along a known fault line. In those cases a flexible surface, or fixing the cause first, is the better spend.
Does concrete add to flooding on my lot?
It adds runoff, because rain cannot soak through it. One patio will not flood a yard that drains well. On a flat lot that already ponds, more hard surface makes it worse unless we add a drain, a swale or gaps for water to soak in.
