A pool deck in Baton Rouge is used hard from April into October, in full sun, by people with wet bare feet. Those three facts set the design. The surface has to grip when soaked, stay cool enough to stand on and drain quickly after a storm or a cannonball. We use textured finishes and light colors, and we slope every part of the deck away from the pool edge toward drains or the yard.
The pool shell and the deck must be free to move separately. A pool is a heavy, rigid box set deep in the clay. The deck is a thin slab floating on the top few inches. They do not move together, so there is a flexible joint between the deck and the coping, and that joint has to be kept sealed. When it opens up, water runs down behind the pool wall and softens the soil. Many of the sunken deck panels we replace started that way.
For an older deck that is solid but worn or stained, a resurfacing coat can renew the texture and color without a tear-out. If panels have dropped or tilted toward the pool, those sections need to come out and be rebuilt on a proper base. New in-ground pools need a city-parish permit, and the barrier and gate rules that come with it affect where deck and fence meet. We work around the pool builder's plan.
Pool decks in Baton Rouge: common questions
What pool deck finish stays coolest?
Light colors and open textures stay cooler than dark, dense, smooth surfaces. A light broom finish or a textured coating in a pale tone is far easier on feet than dark stamped concrete. No concrete in direct July sun is truly cool.
The deck has pulled away from my pool coping. Is that serious?
It is common and it needs attention. The gap is the movement joint doing its job, but the sealant in it has failed. Have it cleaned and resealed so water stops getting behind the pool wall. If panels have also dropped, call us to look.
Can you resurface a pool deck instead of replacing it?
Yes, if the slab under it is sound and level. Resurfacing covers stains and wear and restores grip. It will not hold together a slab that is cracked through and moving.
